Fall Is Here: Time to Complete these Tree Maintenance Tasks

As cold weather moves in and deciduous trees lose their leaves, there are certain types of tree maintenance that should be done. At Woodpecker Tree Service, our local arborists can expertly complete any tree maintenance tasks that you need. Feel free to give us a call and we'll make sure that your trees are healthy and aren't posing any kind of safety hazard.

Tips for Fall Tree Maintenance

As frigid temperatures loom in the near future, it's a good idea to mulch around the base of trees. To do this, you'll want to spread about three inches of organic mulch around a two to three foot radius around the tree's base. You'll want to spread the mulch above the roots, but don't want to pile it up against the tree trunk. The mulch will provide insulation from cold temperatures, while also improving retention of moisture and nutrients.

As leaves fall off of deciduous trees, it's especially important to remove them from the tree's base. This is because fungi is liable to spread in fallen leaves and you don't want it to take hold of the tree itself. Fungal diseases can pose major health hazards to trees, including death, so you'll want to be proactive about preventing them.

In the wintertime, trees can benefit from the application of an anti-desiccant. Winter's dry air and howling winds can cause trees to lose moisture via their pores. Consequently, desiccation could cause signs of trouble such as brown needles. To prevent such problems, it's worth applying an anti-desiccant that has a waxy coating to keep moisture in.

And as a standard maintenance task, dead/damaged/diseased branches should be removed from trees. These branches have a much better chance of crashing down during a period of strong winds, which could cause property damage or injuries. Our local arborist company can make sure that any dangerous limbs are safely removed.
